Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer among Singaporean women. All women are at risk of breast cancer, and the risk increases with age.

What are the causes of breast cancer?

The exact causes of breast cancer are not fully understood, but several factors can increase a person’s risk of developing the disease. These include:

  • Gender: Breast cancer is more common in women than in men.
  • Age: The risk of breast cancer increases with age. Most breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50.
  • Family history: If a person has a family history of breast cancer, particularly if a close relative has had the disease, their risk may be higher.
  • Personal history of breast cancer: If a person has previously been diagnosed with breast cancer, they have an increased risk of developing the disease again.
  • Hormonal factors: Certain hormonal factors, such as starting menstruation at an early age, experiencing menopause at an older age, or taking hormone replacement therapy, can increase a person’s risk of breast cancer.
  • Lifestyle factors: Certain lifestyle factors, such as alcohol consumption, being obese, and not getting enough physical activity, may increase a person’s risk of breast cancer.

It is important to note that having one or more of these risk factors does not necessarily mean that a person will develop breast cancer. Many people with risk factors never develop the disease, and conversely, some people with no known risk factors may develop breast cancer.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

Symptoms of breast cancer may include:

  • a lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area
  • changes in the size or shape of the breast
  • dimpling or puckering of the skin on the breast
  • redness or swelling of the breast
  • nipple discharge or inversion
  • pain in the breast or armpit

However, it is important to note that many people with breast cancer do not experience any symptoms in the early stages of the disease. Hence, it is important to go for regular mammograms to detect breast cancer early.

How can you protect yourself from breast cancer?

The best way to protect yourself from breast cancer is to go for regular mammogram screenings. Performing a monthly breast self-examination also keeps you vigilant of any changes to your breasts. To learn about the recommended breast examinations based on your age, click here.
