What is HPV?
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a viral infection that’s passed between people through skin-to-skin contact, most commonly through sexual contact.
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is estimated that 8 out of 10 people will get HPV at some point in their lifetime.
Why is HPV vaccination important?
In most cases, HPV goes away on its own within one to two years without causing any health issues. However, if the HPV virus remains in the body for a long period of time, it can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts or other diseases over time.
It is important to get HPV vaccination as it is the best prevention against cervical cancer, which is one of the most common cancers affecting women in Singapore.
Who needs the HPV vaccination?
HPV vaccines are approved for clinical use in males and females aged 9 to 26 years old. Learn how HPV affects men and the importance of HPV vaccination for men as well.
Please take note:
- HPV vaccination is not recommended for individuals who had an allergic reaction to a previous dose or to any components in the HPV vaccine
- HPV vaccination is not a substitute for routine cervical cancer screening.
What is the type of HPV vaccination offered at Healthway Medical GP clinics?
Healthway Medical GP clinics offer Gardasil 9 HPV vaccination (also known as Human Papillomavirus 9-valent Vaccine). Gardasil 9 provides protection against:
- Cervical cancer
- Vulvar and vaginal cancers
- Anal cancer
- Certain head and neck cancers, such as throat and back of mouth cancers
- Precancerous cervical, vulvar, vaginal and anal lesions
- Genital warts
How many doses of Gardasil 9 HPV vaccination are required?

*If the second shot is given earlier than 5 months after the first shot, you will need to get a third shot at least 4 months after the second shot was given.

What are the common side effects of the HPV vaccine?
The common side effects of HPV vaccine include pain and swelling at the injection site, muscle ache, headache and fever. These side effects will usually go away on their own. However, please see a doctor if these side effects do not get better or become worse over a prolonged period of time.
