Dr Tan Yung Khan

Profile

Dr Tan Yung Khan is a Senior Consultant Urologist who graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2000 and completed his postgraduate surgical degrees from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2006 and Masters in Surgery from National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2007. After completing his Specialist Urology Training at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 2010, Dr Tan Yung Khan completed Fellowships at University Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Columbia Medical Center in New York. Dr Tan Yung Khan was awarded the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Fellowship to train at the University Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The training focused on minimally invasive surgery, the development of novel microparticles in the treatment of kidney stone diseases and research on new ways to ablate kidney cancers. He also received the Ministry of Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) award and was accepted into the Endourology Society Fellowship Programme at Columbia Medical Center where he continued to develop his skills in endourology and minimally invasive urologic robotic surgery. He was a Senior Lecturer with NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

Dr Tan Yung Khan routinely performs transperineal targeted biopsy of the prostate. He is an accredited Robotic surgeon for Urological cancers and able to provide focal therapy for prostate cancer. Dr Tan Yung Khan is also trained in the management of complex kidney stone diseases with minimally invasive procedures and has a special interest in minimally invasive treatments for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

Background

Dr Tan Yung Khan was formerly a Senior Consultant Urologist and Director of Endourology and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital where he specialised in kidney and urinary stones and prostate diseases. As a surgeon who is always looking to improve patient outcomes, Dr Tan Yung Khan initiated and established several medical procedures in Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospitals; GreenLight Vaporisation of the Prostate (XPS 180-W), UroNav Fusion Biopsy of the Prostate, Supine Mini PCNL and Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery (ECIRS), BPH Water Vapor Therapy and UroLift.

Dr Tan Yung Khan has been invited to Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Africa and USA to share his expertise through live surgery demonstrations and talks. He has a strong interest in research and has published more than 20 original research articles and book chapters. He received the award for “Best Paper” at the Engineering and Urology Society Meeting which was part of the American Urological Association Annual Meeting. His recent project involves developing a robotic system for PCNL which makes the surgical procedure more accurate and safer. He had since successfully performed the “First in Human Robotic Kidney Stone Surgery”.

In recognition of his contributions, he has received the Courage Award for managing SARS patients in the 2003 pandemic, the Healthcare for Humanity Award in 2006 and the Minister of Health Award in 2007 for medical relief work during the tsunami in Bandah Aceh and Merapi eruption and earthquake in Indonesia.
