CNA938 Health Matters: Chocolate Consumption – Dr Philip Koh

Dr Philip Koh (Family Physician, Head of Medical & Ethics Board, Healthway Medical Group) shared that cocoa is rich in antioxidants which provide benefits such as lowering blood pressure, improving blood flow to both our heart and brain as well as improving our cognitive skills, as shown in some studies. This festive season, Dr Koh also reminded listeners that commercial chocolates contain additional ingredients such as butter, milk and sugar, which decreases the cocoa content and correspondingly, reduces the potential health benefits provided. While pure unprocessed cocoa is still the best option, it’s bitter to taste. To this end, Dr Koh recommended listeners to choose chocolates that contain at least 70% dark chocolate.
