Protect Yourself with the Dengue Vaccine in Singapore

Dengue Symptoms

Dengue fever remains a significant health concern in Singapore, with rising case numbers and clusters under surveillance regularly reported by the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, which is recognisable by its black-and-white striped legs, dengue can cause symptoms ranging from high fever and severe headache to rash, joint pain, and in severe cases, bleeding or organ failure. The bite from the dengue mosquito looks like a typical mosquito bite and is difficult to distinguish from other insect bites. Because the bite itself isn’t a reliable sign of dengue, it’s important to watch for symptoms and practice preventive measures.

While vector control remains a cornerstone of prevention, vaccination offers an additional layer of protection, particularly for those at higher risk.

This guide provides essential information about the dengue vaccine, its availability, and considerations for individuals in Singapore.

What Is the Dengue Vaccine?

The only dengue vaccine approved for use in Singapore is Dengvaxia®. This live attenuated tetravalent vaccine is designed to protect against all four dengue virus serotypes: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4.

Dengvaxia® works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the dengue virus. If a vaccinated individual is later exposed to the virus, these antibodies help prevent or mitigate the severity of the disease.

Who Should Get the Dengue Vaccine?

The Dengvaxia® vaccine is approved for use in Singapore for individuals aged 12 to 45 years who have a documented history of prior dengue infection. This includes those who can provide medical records or undergo serological testing (e.g., Dengue IgG) to confirm past exposure.

Recommended Groups:

  • Individuals aged 12–45 years with confirmed prior dengue infection.
  • Residents of dengue-endemic areas with a history of dengue or likely past exposure.
  • Travelers or individuals with repeated stays in dengue-endemic regions who have confirmed prior infection.

Vaccination is not recommended for individuals without prior dengue infection, as it may increase the risk of severe dengue upon subsequent exposure.

When and How Often Should You Get Vaccinated?

Dengvaxia® requires a three-dose regimen administered over 12 months. The doses are given at:

  • 0 months (first dose)
  • 6 months (second dose)
  • 12 months (third dose)

Vaccination is typically initiated at least 6 months after the last dengue infection to ensure optimal efficacy and safety.

What to Expect During and After the Vaccination

The vaccine is administered via a subcutaneous injection, usually in the upper arm. The process is quick and involves minimal discomfort.

Common side effects include:

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Low-grade fever
  • Headache or muscle aches
  • Fatigue

These side effects are generally mild and resolve within a few days.

Rare but serious side effects can include allergic reactions. If you experience symptoms such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
