Protect Yourself with the Varicella Vaccine in Singapore

Chickenpox is commonly thought of as a childhood disease, but it can affect adults too, leading to serious complications. The varicella vaccine helps protect against the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which causes both chickenpox and, later in life, shingles. In Singapore, vaccination is recommended for both children and adults to prevent the spread of this highly contagious disease. By getting vaccinated, you not only protect yourself but also contribute to the community's overall health. Read on to learn more about the varicella vaccine, its importance, and why it’s crucial to get vaccinated in Singapore.
What Is the Varicella Vaccine?
The varicella vaccine, also known as the chickenpox vaccine, is a safe and effective way to prevent chickenpox. It contains a weakened form of the varicella-zoster virus, which stimulates the body’s immune system to produce protection without causing the disease. The vaccine works by prompting the body to develop immunity, preventing the onset of chickenpox symptoms.
Chickenpox spreads easily through direct contact with an infected person's respiratory droplets or fluid from the blisters. It can also be transmitted indirectly via contaminated surfaces. An infected individual is contagious from 1–2 days before the rash appears until all blisters have dried and crusted over, typically about a week after the onset of the rash.
The initial symptoms of chickenpox include:
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Headache
These are followed by the characteristic itchy red spots that appear on the face and body. Over a few days, these spots progress to fluid-filled blisters, which eventually burst, dry up, and form crusts before healing. The rash often appears in waves, with new spots emerging as older ones crust over.
The vaccine is widely available in Singapore, and it has proven to be very effective in reducing the number of chickenpox cases in both children and adults.

Who Should Get the Varicella Vaccine?
The varicella vaccine is recommended for the following groups in Singapore:
- Children: As part of the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS), all children should receive two doses of the varicella vaccine starting at 12 months of age, with a minimum interval of 3 months between doses.
- Adults aged 18 and above: Adults who have not previously received the varicella vaccine or lack evidence of past infection or immunity should receive two doses, with the second dose administered within 4 to 8 weeks of the first.
- Healthcare workers: Individuals working in healthcare settings should be vaccinated to prevent the spread of the virus to vulnerable patients.
- Pregnant women (before pregnancy): Women planning to become pregnant should ensure they are vaccinated before conception if they haven't had chickenpox.
- Travelers: If you plan to travel to areas where chickenpox is more common, getting vaccinated beforehand is advised.
Vaccination is crucial to protect individuals from the risks associated with chickenpox, which can include complications like pneumonia, encephalitis, or secondary bacterial infections, especially in adults.
When and How Often Should You Get Vaccinated?
In Singapore, the varicella (chickenpox) vaccine is recommended as follows:
For Children (12 months and older)
As part of the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS):
- First Dose: Administered at 12 months of age.
- Second Dose: Given at 4–6 years of age, with a minimum interval of 3 months between doses.
For Adults (18 years and older)
As part of the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS):
Two Doses: Adults who have not been previously vaccinated or lack evidence of past infection or immunity should receive two doses of the varicella vaccine.
- First Dose: Administered at any time.
- Second Dose: Given 4 to 8 weeks after the first dose.
Vaccinations under NCIS and NAIS are subsidised at participating healthcare institutions, including polyclinics, CHAS GP clinics, and Healthier SG clinics.
Healthway Medical is a participating provider under Healthier SG. Eligible Singapore Citizens can enrol with a Healthway clinic to receive fully subsidised recommended vaccinations, including varicella, as part of their preventive care.
Eligible individuals may also use MediSave to offset any remaining costs.
If you’re unsure about your vaccination history, consult a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate vaccination schedule for you.
What to Expect During and After the Vaccination
The varicella vaccine is administered via an injection, usually in the upper arm. The process is quick and straightforward. Most people experience mild side effects, which are typically short-lived and resolve on their own. These may include:
- Redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site
- Mild fever
- Slight rash
In rare cases, people may experience more significant side effects, but these are uncommon. It’s essential to understand that the chickenpox vaccine side effects are generally mild compared to the risks posed by the disease itself.
